Aluminum hydroxide, with the chemical formula Al(OH)₃, appears as a white crystalline powder. It is insoluble in water but readily dissolves in both acidic and alkaline solutions, a key trait that reflects its nature as an amphoteric hydroxide. When subjected to thermal processing in an air atmosphere, it undergoes dehydration to produce aluminum oxide—this property underscores its important role in industrial alumina manufacturing.
As a classic amphoteric compound, aluminum hydroxide reacts with acids to form the corresponding salts and water. It also interacts with strong bases, yielding soluble aluminate substances. Due to its weak acidity, it is sometimes referred to as aluminic acid (H₃AlO₃). In practical reactions with bases, however, it mainly generates tetrahydroxyaluminate anions ([Al(OH)₄]⁻). For this reason, its more precise chemical designation in technical and academic contexts is aluminum hydroxide monohydrate (HAlO₂·H₂O).

Aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)₃) is a multifunctional inorganic compound, naturally presented as white crystal powder with Mohs hardness between 2.5 and 3.5. It is barely soluble in water, with solubility lower than 0.1 mg/mL at 20 °C, yet it reacts readily with acid and alkali solutions, showing typical amphoteric chemical properties. When heated above 200 °C, it gradually loses crystal water through thermal decomposition and transforms into gamma-alumina (γ-Al₂O₃), making it a core raw material for related industrial production.
